Prescribing Prism

Prism is helpful for some patients who have difficulty with eye alignment (binocular vision dysfunction). Prism lenses help the eyes to work together. In some patients, one or both eyes may tend to pull up, down, to the left, or to the right. The use of prism in the lenses tricks the brain into thinking the eyes are working together by shifting the image only slightly up, down, left, or right. Prisms are sometimes used for compensation and sometimes for comfort.

Often we prescribe prism in conjunction with vision therapy. The prism is used to help our patients find immediate relief of their symptoms, while vision therapy helps the patient gain the life-long benefits of ocular alignment by eliminating or reducing the need for prism.
