Brain Injuries

Brain Injury

Sometimes when there is brain injury, vision problems can go undetected during initial treatment. When vision is compromised through brain injury or concussion, the results can be profound. Because the brain plays such a big role in the visual process, any injury can disrupt the flow resulting in vision problems. Symptoms can include:

  • Double Vision
  • Loss of visual field
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty reading
  • Comprehension challenges
  • Problems with depth perception
  • Concentration and comprehension issues
  • Trouble with tracking and/or focus

A new study in the journal of Pediatrics suggests that recovery from a brain injury or concussion can take anywhere from days to weeks to years depending on the age of the injured and the severity of the concussion. In conjunction with other symptoms there is the possibility of learning problems, and returning to school too soon can worsen symptoms.

There is a difference between sight and vision and vision therapy is specialized visual rehabilitation. Vision therapy works to restore any neurological compromise that may have resulted from a traumatic brain injury.
